THIS IS NOT A FEED
==================

Modern on-demand media begins with a question:

  What do you want?

Broadcast media can begin differently:

  I don't know. Let's see what's on.

Nitetime resembles a personal television station or a late-night
regional outlet more than a conventional creator homepage. Dan can
decide what is playing. Original music can run beneath original
footage. Station IDs can divide old films, experiments, strange
clips, art, and fictional commercials. A visitor can simply tune in.

The apparent inefficiency is the human part. Finding an unfamiliar
movie at 1:40 in the morning because a strange station happened to
be carrying it is unlike selecting a perfectly optimized item from a
recommendation engine.

A DESTINATION WITH GEOGRAPHY
----------------------------

The larger vision is not another giant social network. It is an
independent destination with internal geography.

A visitor tunes into the station. Something catches attention. The
visitor opens another service, talks to somebody, finds an archive,
downloads a file, encounters a mystery, or enters the MUD. Several
nights later the visitor returns. Something new has appeared, but
the old things remain.

Over time the language of the place becomes familiar:

  Lake Koshkonong
  WISCO 608
  Studio 608
  the Garage
  the Signal
  the transmitters
  the strange reports
  the archives
  the fictional history
  the real history

Eventually the distinction between the last two becomes pleasantly
unclear.

That is not content delivery. It is world-building.

WHY THE ARCHIVE IS DEEP
-----------------------

Information becomes more interesting when it lives somewhere. A
file tree can tell a story. A forgotten text file can feel like an
artifact. A directory creates anticipation before the next document
is opened.

The goal is not merely to preserve information. It is to preserve
explorability.
