One of the greatest missteps in American infrastructure policy was the systematic dismantling of our railroad network, driven by outdated taxation policies that penalized railroads for simply existing. We cannot afford to remain idle while our transportation system struggles under the weight of inefficiency, congestion, and environmental harm. WHO'S RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RAIL DECLINE? --------------------------------------- For over a century, railroads in the United States have been unfairly burdened by property taxes on every mile of track they own -- regardless of whether it is in active use. Unlike roads and highways, which are maintained through federal and state funding, rail infrastructure is taxed as private property. This policy, dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, encouraged rail companies to rip out underutilized tracks instead of maintaining them for future growth. This was further compounded by the rise of federal highway subsidies, which gave cars and trucks a free pass on infrastructure costs while rail was forced to pay its own way. The result? A gutted rail network, an overreliance on trucks, and a transportation system that is increasingly unsustainable. The agencies currently responsible for rail policy and infrastructure oversight include: * The Surface Transportation Board (STB) -- Regulates economic aspects of freight railroads. * The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) -- Oversees safety regulations and rail infrastructure development. * Congress -- Sets tax policies and infrastructure funding priorities. * State and local governments -- Control property tax laws affecting rail corridors.
