The effectiveness of FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) in elections and politics is largely due to how our brains respond to threats. Evolutionarily, fear served to alert us to danger, pushing us to respond immediately to avoid harm. Modern campaigns often harness this primal reaction by painting the opponent’s victory as a direct threat, which tends to override people’s idealism or desire for positive change. Rather than striving toward a common ideal, many are drawn into defensive thinking, as fear narrows our focus to the immediate risk rather than the broader, long-term vision.
On a societal level, FUD resonates because it aligns with an established narrative that we can recognize and react to instantly, even if the specifics are vague or exaggerated. Idealistic messages, on the other hand, require hope, investment, and a sense of agency—qualities that don’t gain the same momentum in a fast-paced media environment built around short attention spans. Also, social and digital platforms amplify emotionally charged messages, pushing divisive narratives that keep people engaged but also feeling cornered. When fear is the foundation, there's little room left for inspiring a collective push toward shared ideals.
