I am starting to think the Southern Poverty Law Center is more grift than mission. A lot of these organizations ask for money to fight a problem, but the moment the problem actually starts going away, their reason for existing starts to disappear too.
Think about it like this: if your job is cleaning up garbage in the park, at some point the temptation is to tip over a few cans just to make sure there is still work to do.
That is how a lot of these groups feel to me. They have highly paid executives, big fundraising machines, and a built-in incentive to keep the outrage going forever. They cannot afford to solve the problem because solving it would threaten the business model.
So when stories come out suggesting the SPLC helped keep bad actors relevant, it only reinforces what a lot of us already suspect: the outrage industry is real.
At this point, everything feels like a racket. The news feeds it, the nonprofits feed off it, and regular people are expected to keep paying and keep panicking.
