Forrest Gump is just Pee-wee’s Big Adventure rewritten as Oscar bait.
Both movies are about a strange innocent man drifting through a mythic America, entering random events, confusing everyone, accidentally becoming important, then moving on to the next set piece.
Pee-wee wants his bike. Forrest wants Jenny.
Pee-wee meets bikers, truckers, tourists, Hollywood weirdos, and the Alamo. Forrest meets Elvis, presidents, Vietnam, Watergate, protest culture, and the shrimp industry.
Same machine. Different paint job.
The only real difference is that Pee-wee’s Big Adventure admits it is a cartoon, while Forrest Gump puts on soft lighting and asks for an Academy Award.
