Have you stared at a tattoo-covered forearm and thought, "That intricate skull
might mean he's seen some stuff," only to realize you have no idea what stuff?
Fear not: here is your official (and completely unreliable) guide to the
mysterious world of ink behind bars.

THE BASICS
----------

Crown -- Usually gang affiliation, or the wearer legally changed his name to
"King Beef." Either way, respect is mandatory.

Pizza slice -- An unbreakable love for cheese. Perhaps its wearer ran a hustle
trading ramen packets for commissary deep-dish.

Lizard or dragon -- A specific gang, or somebody who watched The NeverEnding
Story too many times and really wanted a Falkor.

Puzzle piece -- A missing piece in the wearer's life, or many lost hours of
Candy Crush before getting locked up.

FACE TATTOOS: THE BOLD AND THE BRAVE
------------------------------------

Joker smile -- Insanity, or a refusal to let bad vibes win. He is here to laugh
through the pain or tell you he knows a guy who can make you disappear.

Eyes on the eyelids -- A cry for help from someone who hates being awakened for
count.

Tiny taco on the cheek -- "Ride or die" in the underground burrito trade. Trust
these guys to get extra salsa when times get rough.

NECK TATTOOS: HIGH COMMITMENT, HIGHER CONFUSION
-----------------------------------------------

Spider web -- Time served, or a deep emotional connection to Charlotte's Web.

Rose -- Love or remembrance. With a "Mom" banner, it doubles as a
get-out-of-trouble card when she visits.

Floppy disk -- Wait... how long has this guy been locked up?

FULL CHEST AND BACK: WHERE THE LEGENDS LIVE
-------------------------------------------

Dragon around the torso -- Honor, power, and possibly Dungeons & Dragons.

Tiger leaping over a prison fence -- He tried to escape once, but not well.

Poem in giant script -- A warning that this person will rap at you unprompted.

FINAL THOUGHTS
--------------

If you're considering prison tattoos, whether or not you're incarcerated, get
something that will confuse future historians: a Game Boy Advance on your
wrist, perhaps, or the full script of Shrek 2 down your arm.

Better yet, stick with a solid "Mom" in a heart. Some classics never go out of
style. Happy translating!
