YESTERDAY'S SURVIVING CHOICE: LOOT
----------------------------------

With Penny beside me, we pried the battered EmergenTek trunk from the pickup
bed while several survivors watched for an ambush. Warning labels covered
the dented case, and its lock held tight until Penny found a metal pry bar.
The group steadied the trunk as I forced the bar beneath the lock. It opened
with a shriek like nails on a chalkboard.

Black foam protected the contents:

  * A sturdy, fully charged stun baton.

  * Two vials marked "Stimulant A-13" and "USE IN EMERGENCIES ONLY -- TEST
    PHASE."

  * Six portable flare sticks.

  * A blueprint of a train car, its walls heavily shaded. Someone had
written: "Subject hold -- watch for reanimation."

We gained valuable gear without drawing a zombie attack, but the blueprint
spread unease through the group. The warning that the occupants of Car 14
"can't die" now sounded less like a rumor. EmergenTek may have used the train
for experimental research, and nobody knew whether the vials were antidote,
stimulant, or something worse.

THE ROADS NOT TAKEN
-------------------

Fight -- Clearing the remaining autorack zombies would leave us
               unprepared for Car 14.

Sneak -- Quiet scouting might reveal clues, but not the trunk's gear.

Improvise -- Traps and barricades would leave EmergenTek's secret sealed.

Persuade -- A more united group would still be dangerously underarmed.

CAR 14 LOOMS
------------

The autorack is nearly secure. Ahead stands Car 14, the one named in the
warning note. According to the blueprint, it resembles a containment
facility with reinforced walls and an internal gate system. A label on the
door reads "Do Not Enter Without Authorization."

Penny grips the stun baton. I hold the stimulant vials while survivors argue
over pressing ahead or fortifying our position. A scribble on the blueprint
mentions an "emergency floor release." Perhaps part of the floor can open;
if EmergenTek held something indestructible, the system may have been meant
to jettison it from the moving train.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
------------------

Fight -- Storm Car 14 together with the stun baton and firearms.

Sneak -- Scout quietly, using the flares only when necessary.

Improvise -- Rig the gear or floor release to contain or drop the undead.

Persuade -- Organize a specialized plan for subjects that cannot die.

Loot -- Search the autorack and opened trunk again for anything missed.

We have better gear and chilling intelligence. The question is no longer
only whether we survive Car 14, but what we are about to meet inside it.
