ANCIENT MECHANISMS TO CLOCKWORK

c. 2nd-1st century BCE
The Antikythera mechanism demonstrates that complex geared astronomical
calculation existed in the ancient Mediterranean. It encoded cycles through
physical gearing rather than electronic logic.

Medieval and early modern period
Astronomical clocks combined timekeeping with calendrical and astronomical
indications. Clock towers often included moving figures. The clock became both a
practical machine and a public demonstration of controlled automatic motion.

Renaissance through Enlightenment
Courtly automata grew increasingly elaborate. Clockwork figures moved across
tables, played scenes, rang bells, or imitated living movement. These were not
"computers" in the modern general-purpose sense, but many did execute behavior
encoded mechanically in shaped parts, cams, gears, pins, and linkages.

18th century
Writing, drawing, and musical automata pushed the idea further. Some machines
stored substantial sequences of motion in mechanical form. The fascination was
not merely utility. It was the spectacle of a machine apparently doing something
on its own.

The important continuity is not that every automaton was a computer. It is that
humans were already separating intention from execution: design the mechanism,
set it in motion, and let the mechanism carry out the sequence.
