INDUSTRIAL CALCULATION TO DIGITAL COMPUTERS

Early 1800s
Programmable industrial control through punched media becomes a powerful idea in
textile machinery. Punched cards later become strongly associated with data and
control in computing.

1820s-1840s
Charles Babbage designs automatic calculating engines. Difference Engine No. 1
was intended to calculate and tabulate polynomial functions. The later Analytical
Engine concept separated functions analogous to storage and processing and used
punched-card ideas for control/input.

Late 19th and early 20th century
Mechanical and electromechanical calculation expands through adding machines,
tabulators, punched-card systems, relays, and specialized control equipment.

Mid-20th century
Vacuum-tube and relay computers turn machine logic into electrical switching at
speeds impossible for mechanical systems.

1970s-1980s
Microprocessors compress the logic of rooms and cabinets into chips. By 1985 the
Commodore 128 can sit on a desk and expose graphics, sound, disk commands,
structured BASIC, 40-column VIC-II output, and 80-column VDC output directly to a
home user.

2026 archive observation
A C128 BASIC program and an 18th-century automaton are radically different
machines, but both are intelligible as designed state-changing systems. One uses
software instructions. The other uses matter shaped into instructions.
