Q: Did automation exist before computers?
A: Absolutely. Machines performed automatic sequences centuries before electronic
computers. Clockwork, water power, weights, springs, cams, pins, gears, linkages,
and punched media could all control behavior.

Q: Were all automata "computers"?
A: No. That word becomes misleading if applied to every self-moving machine. An
automaton may carry out a fixed sequence without performing general calculation.
A mechanical calculator may compute without resembling a robot. The interesting
history is richer when those categories are kept distinct.

Q: What makes them feel computer-like?
A: Encoded behavior. A machine can be arranged so that its future actions are
constrained by a stored physical pattern - a cam profile, gearing, pin layout,
punched pattern, or other mechanism.

Q: Did pre-electronic machines perform real calculation?
A: Yes. Mechanical calculators and later Babbage's calculating-engine designs are
clear examples. The Antikythera mechanism used gearing to represent astronomical
cycles. Babbage's Difference Engine design automated mathematical tabulation.

Q: Why does this connect so naturally to home computers?
A: Because the human experience is recognizable. You define the rules, start the
machine, and watch the behavior emerge from what you encoded.
