ESCAPEMENTS
An escapement regulates the release of stored energy in a clock. Instead of a
weight or spring unwinding all at once, the mechanism releases motion in controlled
increments synchronized to an oscillator.
Why it matters to this archive:
A useful automatic machine needs more than power. It often needs TIMING.
Clockwork automation depends on controlled progression through states. The
escapement is not a CPU clock, but the analogy is tempting for a reason: both
provide regular timing against which other state changes can be organized.
Do not confuse analogy with identity. A mechanical escapement and an electronic
clock signal are very different devices. Their shared role is regularization of
when things advance.
