Ever have a car ride you'll never forget?
Years ago I got picked up for an office carpool in a Rolls Royce. Not a new one. A proper 1960s machine. Everything about it felt like refined perfection. Sitting inside was like sitting in a piece of artwork.
The woman driving it worked with us and casually mentioned it was her "family beater." It had been handed down from her parents. Her dad had been a CEO somewhere back in the day, and this was their vacation car. The bar car. The "load up the kids and head out for the summer" car.
I sat in the back imagining those road trips. The kind of legroom that isn't even legroom anymore. It was its own little world. Luxury on a level built for people I will never meet or understand, and there I was catching a ride to work in it.
What made the ride truly unforgettable was the suspension. Going down the 405, every bump caused the car to do something surreal. Instead of jolts or rattles, it would almost bound along. The car would soak up a bump and give you a gentle upward lift. Floating. No jarring, no shaking, just this strange elegant bounce.
I have no idea why that memory came back to me today, but it did. Now I'm curious.
