SHOE FEST 2026: THE UFO, THE CLOWN, AND THE ACCIDENTAL ATTRACTION
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am back from Shoe Fest 2026, and I think I learned quite a bit about
what nitetime.net could become there next year.
I was not an official vendor. I went as a camper with some artwork,
postcards, a nitetime.net banner, a megaphone, and enough strange ideas to
make the campsite gradually turn into its own little attraction.
And there actually was an attraction this year.
We had a scary clown character that slowly changed over the course of the
festival.
At first it was arranged so it looked like the clown was beginning to
emerge from behind the nitetime.net banner.
Then it moved.
Then it changed again.
Eventually the clown wound up lying on the ground looking dead.
It became one of those little environmental jokes where people walking past
could notice that something was different every time they came through.
Then I made the mistake of putting the costume on.
Instantly, I discovered there is an enormous difference between a creepy
clown prop and a creepy clown that suddenly starts walking around.
People were legitimately scared.
That was funny for approximately five seconds, and then I realized I really
did not want to accidentally send somebody into a nightmare at a music
festival.
Shoe Fest has a wonderfully strange crowd, and I strongly suspect not
everybody there is experiencing reality using precisely the factory settings.
So I retired the full clown costume pretty quickly.
For the rest of the experiment I just walked around wearing the clown pants
and the ribcage hoodie.
Much better.
Still weird.
Far less likely to become part of somebody's difficult spiritual journey.
THE UFO ACTIVITY
================
The other major piece of the weekend was the UFO activity.
I had a megaphone and periodically made announcements about strange things
happening overhead.
At one point somebody yelled back asking where the line started for the anal
probes.
That was when I knew the crowd understood the assignment.
I never used the megaphone to advertise nitetime.net or announce prices. I
had not paid to be an official vendor, and I did not want to cross the line
from having fun at my campsite into pretending I had purchased a commercial
booth.
The art sales stayed deliberately low-key.
Even so, I sold five sets of prints over the weekend, enough to pay for my
food on Sunday.
The postcards apparently did some work too.
Nitetime.net normally sees roughly 20 users a day. During Shoe Fest I was
seeing more like 50 a day.
That is not massive traffic, but considering I never stood there yelling
the website address into a megaphone, it was a noticeable increase.
THE BIG REALIZATION
===================
The biggest realization, though, was that the campsite needs to look much
more obviously like:
SOMETHING IS HAPPENING HERE AND THE PUBLIC IS WELCOME.
This year I had ground lighting and flashlights hanging inside the Easy-Up,
but I had left most of my normal camping lights at home.
So at night the setup did not have nearly enough visual pull.
The attraction existed, but from a distance it could still read as a guy
camping under a canopy with a banner and some strange decorations.
Next year I want to make the attraction unmistakable.
The working idea is:
ALIEN ENCOUNTER
EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP
Instead of simply decorating a campsite, I want to turn a 12-by-12 Easy-Up
into a tiny walk-through alien encounter.
Black lights.
Fluorescent markings.
Recovered UFO evidence.
Strange government equipment.
Blinking control panels.
Alien sounds.
Fake scientific displays.
A narrow path through the tent.
A beginning.
A middle.
And one ridiculous payoff at the end.
Basically a miniature alien haunted house designed to take maybe a minute or
two to experience.
The important lesson from the clown is that I do not want it to be intensely
scary.
Shoe Fest is not a haunted attraction, and there may be people wandering
through who are tired, intoxicated, altered, or simply not expecting
somebody to leap out at them.
So the goal should be weird, funny, eerie, and surprising, rather than
terrifying.
You should come out laughing.
And then, naturally:
EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP.
That is where the prints and postcards live.
THE SURVIVOR STICKER
====================
One idea I especially like is giving everybody who makes it through a
glow-in-the-dark sticker:
I SURVIVED THE ALIEN ENCOUNTER
At night those stickers would start appearing all over the festival.
People wearing them become walking advertisements for whatever strange thing
is happening inside the nitetime.net tent.
And because someone already brought up the anal probes this year, the alien
laboratory will almost certainly require some kind of ridiculous probe
apparatus.
Current engineering concept:
A piece of 2-inch PVC pipe painted chrome and mounted to an unnecessarily
complicated piece of alien medical equipment.
Nothing anatomically realistic.
Just large enough that everybody instantly understands the joke.
THE WEATHER PROBLEM
===================
Another major lesson from the weekend was weather.
The morning dew was brutal.
The Easy-Up would become completely soaked overnight. I could shake the
canopy and create a small rainstorm, and then more condensation would
continue forming.
Anything intended to stay in the attraction overnight needs to be designed
accordingly.
Plastic signs.
Vinyl graphics.
Coroplast.
Sealed electronics.
Plastic totes.
Outdoor-rated lighting.
Nothing important made from ordinary paper or cardboard.
THE SALVAGE PLAN
================
Fortunately, I now have about a year to build this thing.
And I do not intend to go shopping for everything.
The plan is to keep my eyes open.
Old electronics.
Broken control panels.
PVC.
Curtains.
Weird lights.
Fluorescent plastic.
Old computer equipment.
Speakers.
Medical-looking junk.
Anything free or nearly free that can be transformed into something that
looks like it came out of a crashed spacecraft or a government laboratory
from 1978.
THE PROTOTYPE
=============
That is probably the biggest thing I took away from Shoe Fest 2026.
The strange stuff worked.
The clown worked.
The UFO announcements worked.
People interacted with it.
People bought art.
People visited the website.
But the campsite did not yet visually communicate the full idea.
This year was the prototype.
Next year I want somebody walking past to see the glow from halfway down the
row and immediately think:
What the hell is going on in there?
Then come inside and find out.
