History of Highwood a lakeside community
OMG, the summer of 1832 in the marshes around Lake Koshkonong sounds like something straight out of a Robert Eggers horror movie!
Starving families hiding in the marsh. Armed militia and soldiers searching the reeds. Fear moving through the same shoreline and lowlands where we now have cottages, boats, beach days, and summer cookouts.
The more I read about the Black Hawk War and the Lake Koshkonong area, the more I realize Highwood sits on top of a much older, much darker, and much more interesting history than most of us ever talk about.
There were Native villages nearby. White Crow's village at Carcajou Point. Old travel routes. Camps. Shoreline life. Then came 1832 -- displacement, panic, pursuit, and tragedy.
Would people be interested if I put together a full "The Dark Past of Lake Koshkonkong" post or small series? Starting way before Highwood was Highwood -- from the Native history of the lake, through the brutal summer of 1832, and eventually into how this beach community came to be?
Because honestly, the lake has stories.
