THE 1930s BUILDING BOOM
=======================

By the late 1930s, the southwest shore of Lake Koshkonong was in the
middle of a striking transformation.

A December 31, 1937 account identified in the supplied history as
appearing in the "Sky View Story of Southern Wisconsin" described a
lively community of Illinois residents and people employed in
Edgerton. What had been a small summer resort occupying only a few
hundred feet of lake frontage had expanded into a colorful
unincorporated village.

The account reports that more than 400 cottages and homes were built
within a few years. That figure appears to describe the broader area
of new southwest-shore development and should not be attributed to
Highwood alone without checking the original article.

NEIGHBORING SUBDIVISIONS
------------------------

Highwood grew alongside Mallwood Estates and Hickory Hill. Strict
land-contract rules reportedly shaped construction in the new
subdivisions. Such terms could influence what owners built, how lots
were used, and the appearance and operation of the settlement.

The Lakewood Developer's Association of Chicago, led by Nat Malnick,
is credited in the supplied account with an important role in this
period. Promotion brought buyers from Illinois as well as residents
whose working lives were tied to Edgerton.

The community therefore developed with two overlapping identities:
a lake resort reached from Illinois and a home near a Wisconsin
employment center. Seasonal and permanent uses would continue to
shape local priorities.

A CHANGED SHORELINE
-------------------

Hundreds of small buildings meant more than a construction boom.
They brought roads, wells, sanitation demands, electric service,
tax questions, clubs, and a need for common decision-making. The
1930s created much of the built landscape whose limitations became
the disputes of the 1950s.
