ELECTRICITY, WATER, AND FISH
============================

Electric power reportedly arrived in Highwood Estates in 1931. For
a growing lake community, electricity changed both daily life and
the kinds of houses that could be advertised to prospective owners.

By the late 1930s, many homes were described as having electric
lights and modern heating. Some offered running water, electric
ranges, and electric hot-water heaters. These conveniences were
notable selling points at a time when a rural or seasonal cottage
could not be assumed to have them.

The new infrastructure also helped Highwood develop beyond a simple
summer camp. A house with heat, light, water, and dependable access
could support longer stays and permanent residence.

THE LAKE AS SHARED INFRASTRUCTURE
---------------------------------

Lake Koshkonong itself was both the attraction and a shared resource.
Fishing helped draw residents and visitors. The supplied history
reports that the Wisconsin Conservation Department stocked the lake
with several species and distributed millions of fry and
fingerlings.

Exact stocking years, species, and quantities should be checked
against department records. The larger point is clear: public action
helped maintain the recreational fishery on which local promotion
and enjoyment depended.

The lake also received the consequences of shore development.
Sanitation failures, flooded blocks, and reports of raw sewage in the
water made environmental quality a residential as well as a
recreational issue. Highwood's conveniences and its environmental
problems were two sides of the same rapid growth.
