• Building an Operating System for a 2002 Lowrey Organ
• I am rebuilding a Lowrey Jamboree LC/20 as a self-contained intelligent
• performance organ.
• The organ remains a real Lowrey: its keyboards, pedals, rhythm section,
• sounds, toe switches, and expression pedal still work as designed. A
• dedicated Ubuntu computer now lives inside it, connected through USB
• MIDI and a USB audio interface that listens to the actual sound coming
• from the organ.
• The goal is not to turn the Lowrey into a generic MIDI keyboard. It is
• to give it the abilities it never had: a sequencer, a searchable music
• library, a recorder, a visual performance console, programmable
• controls, audio monitoring, and eventually an AI composer and
• performance-assistance system.
• The computer can already send MIDI to the LC/20 and receive MIDI back
• from it. That means it can play the organ's Upper, Lower, Bass, Lower
• Solo, and Drum sections independently. It can also observe what the
• physical instrument is doing: keyboard notes, expression pedal movement,
• sustain, rhythm state, and selected physical controls.
• A major part of the project is that the computer listens to the real
• organ audio, not merely the MIDI it sends. The Lowrey's headphone/audio
• output feeds a dedicated USB capture interface. The system can measure
• level, peak, clipping, silence, and actual waveform data without routing
• the signal back to speakers or creating feedback.
• The new performance screen has become an instrument panel rather than a
• normal web dashboard. It shows a 60-frame-per-second oscilloscope of the
• actual Lowrey audio, live level meters, playback state, queue position,
• hardware state, temperature, memory, and recording status.
• It also contains a visual representation of the organ itself: Upper and
• Lower keyboard strips, bass pedals, drum pads, section lamps, expression
• level, sustain, rhythm, FX, playback, MIDI input, MIDI output, and audio
• status. Physical notes light green. Notes being played by the computer
• light amber. If both occur on the same note, the display turns red.
• The system already has a large local MIDI library. More than 107,000
• MIDI files were imported from a personal collection and can be searched
• quickly from the interface. Tracks can be played directly from the
• Incoming library, kept in an Approved collection, deleted, queued, or
• saved into playlists.
• Internet acquisition is also underway. The Library screen includes
• verified public MIDI sources for Bach and Baroque music, hymns and
• chorales, jazz, and game themes. A selected file is imported into the
• local library, where it can be played, added to a queue, or saved into a
• playlist.
• Playback is direct and native. The system sends the MIDI file's timing,
• channels, controllers, velocities, and SysEx events through to the
• organ. It also maintains a deterministic cleanup path at the end of
• playback or when stopped, preventing stuck notes.
• A multi-song queue now works on the physical LC/20. It has been tested
• with sequential tracks, live MIDI activity, actual audio capture, and
• cleanup between songs. Recordings can capture the sound that the Lowrey
• actually produced as WAV files, with playback metadata and provenance.
• The current interface is being redesigned as a full-screen Organ OS
• desktop. Instead of a conventional browser page, it has an
• appliance-style system bar, application dock, workspace windows, and a
• performance control room designed for a portrait display mounted in the
• organ's music holder.
• The next stages are about turning this from a powerful jukebox and
• instrument monitor into a true performance system: better playlists and
• library organization, automatic loudness management based on the real
• audio output, more learned physical controls, macro triggers,
• OBS-friendly audio output, assisted performance modes, and local
• AI-generated structured compositions.
• The idea is simple: the computer should disappear into the Lowrey. The
• organ should feel as though it has acquired a lifetime of music, a
• recording studio, a control room, and eventually a musical collaborator.
