I never heard of Ethan Zuckerman, but this fat tub of guts from MIT is going around now appoligizing for creating the popup ad. I never heard of the guy and frankly I think he is full of bullshit just trying to sell a book. Even if his claim is correct, he didn't make anything new, he just used existing technology that other people created, and put an ad in it. He didn't innovate or create anything, just learned how to use Javascript and PERL and put an ad in it and claims it was before anyone else (Because MIT is into advertising??) It doesn't make sense and even if true he didnt create anything, just used the tools.
With that said, at this time I would like to apologize for my Internet sins... I came up with feeding HTML code into pre-2000 web based chat rooms, causing the developers to realize how dangerous letting people submit code as a variable is and may have caused real advancement in the technology arts of chat rooms online, they soon began filtering out tags. Also I would like to apologize for demonstrating that Gif 89a (the tech name for animated gifs) are annoying on a website, thus we no longer have spinning global icons and crap everyplace.
There is my Internet record from 1997-1999 prove I didn't do that and cause social change.
