Everyone talks about how Ed Wood (1994) revived the legacy of the world's worst director.
But no one talks about what it did to Martin Landau!
Watch enough behind-the-scenes footage and you'll notice something strange. Everyone on that set, Depp, Burton, and Parker included, says the same thing.
"Martin didn't play Bela. He became him."
Landau was 65, a once-great actor clawing back from obscurity, when he took the part of Bela Lugosi. The crew joked that his performance was too good. Lights flickered during takes, his voice dropped two octaves, and he would drift off between scenes muttering in Hungarian. Even Tim Burton admitted in a later interview, "It got weird... like Bela was there."
When the movie wrapped, things only got stranger.
Landau didn't stop being Bela.
At first it was charming. He'd slip into the accent during Q&As and talk about Bela in the first person. But friends said it started to feel wrong. He would wake up from naps quoting White Zombie. Makeup artists said his hands trembled the same way Bela's did from morphine. His daughter once told an interviewer, "I lost my dad to that movie. He never really came back."
After Landau's Oscar win, Sarah Jessica Parker gave a cryptic comment in a 1995 profile.
"Martin went somewhere else for that role. I don't know where, but he didn't come back alone."
Dolores Fuller, who had dated the real Ed Wood, was still alive then. In one taped Q&A, she looks visibly uneasy talking about Landau.
"That man... he brought Bela back. I could feel him in the room."
Landau's final interviews before his death in 2017 are haunting to watch. He drifts between himself and Bela without realizing it. He says things like, "Bela's still around. He's fine. We both are."
