Been digging deep into Ed Wood lately, and one thing I didn't expect to keep running into was ... the mob.
Back in the day, organized crime quietly owned or financed movie theaters all over the country -- especially the ones showing low-budget stuff and grindhouse features. That's the world Ed worked in. The guys were charming, slick, and always kept him busy -- but Ed never came out ahead. The money flowed upward, not toward the filmmakers. He was one of hundreds of working writers and directors feeding the machine.
Most people never hear this part of movie history, but you've heard of the film that blew it all open: Deep Throat. A cheap adult movie turned into a nationwide sensation, and suddenly the government got curious. They said it was about "protecting children," but really it was about following the money. Once the feds realized how much cash was moving through the B-movie and adult-film circuits, they went after the mob the same old way -- with tax laws.
