The well of Ed Wood just gets deeper every time I look. I found a guy who has spent the last five years doing enough research to fill at least one volume of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
The power of the Internet is really what made this possible. Back in the late 70s there was a movie guide that, for a couple of years, kept getting write-ins calling Plan 9 the worst movie by the worst director. From there it went from forgotten to remembered to fully researched and documented territory.
Calling Ed Wood the worst director is obviously silly. There are plenty of people you never heard of who made one stinker and vanished. The thing with Ed and Plan 9 is the "so bad it's good" magic. People think old sci-fi movies are corny and dumb, but honestly, go back and watch them. Most are slow, talky snooze fests. The ones with a great monster stand out, like The Blob, but countless others promised a terrifying visitor from space and then stuck you on a fake spaceship listening to people fret.
Not Plan 9, baby. You get Vampira and Tor Johnson, two perfect creeps you see plenty of. You get UFOs on fire swinging from string, wild stock footage, hilarious dialogue, Criswell opening the show. That movie is the whole package when it comes to fun bad sci-fi.
And now I forgot what I was about to rant about.
