The James Tolkan Cinematic Universe: The Evidence

James Tolkan spent half his career playing what feels like the same furious bald authority figure who keeps getting reassigned to increasingly insane jobs.

So imagine this: Principal Strickland finds the DeLorean one quiet afternoon in Hill Valley. He takes one look at the flux capacitor, says something like, “McFly, you irresponsible little punk,” and then accidentally launches himself into the James Tolkan Cinematic Universe.

The timeline basically goes like this:

1973 — *Serpico*. Strickland arrives in New York and joins the police department as Lt. Steiger. Within about six minutes he has concluded that the entire NYPD is full of slackers.

1975 — *Love and Death*. Something goes catastrophically wrong with the DeLorean and he lands in Napoleonic Europe, where he apparently decides, “Fine. I’m Napoleon now.” Tolkan literally played Napoleon in this movie, which makes the theory magnificent.

1979 — *The Amityville Horror*. Now he's a coroner. After witnessing supernatural murder-house nonsense, Strickland is probably less concerned about ghosts than whether anybody filed the proper paperwork.

1981 — *Prince of the City*. He becomes the district attorney. This feels like a promotion in the Strickland Career Path: school discipline → police discipline → EVERYBODY discipline.

1983 — *WarGames*. He joins the FBI just in time for Matthew Broderick to nearly start World War III with a modem. At this point Strickland's hatred of teenagers becomes completely justified. “I KNEW IT. GIVE A SLACKER A COMPUTER AND HE LAUNCHES THE MISSILES.”

1985 — *Back to the Future*. He returns to Hill Valley and takes the principal job, presumably thinking it will finally be peaceful. Then Marty McFly shows up.

1986 — *Top Gun*. That does it. Strickland quits education and joins the Navy, eventually becoming Commander “Stinger” Jardian, where he finally finds an organization that allows him to scream at reckless young men professionally. Maverick is essentially Marty McFly with an F-14.

And this is where the theory becomes perfect.

Stinger yelling at Maverick about his ego is exactly Principal Strickland talking to Marty McFly after being given an aircraft carrier.

Then:

1986 — *Armed and Dangerous*. He's somehow become a union treasurer. Probably a brief attempt at civilian life. Doesn't take.

1987 — *Masters of the Universe*. Now he's Detective Lubic, investigating Skeletor, He-Man and interdimensional cosmic warfare. And unlike virtually everyone else in that movie, Tolkan reacts to the insanity exactly like Strickland would: Who are these lunatics and why are they destroying my town?

1988 — *Viper*. He becomes Colonel William Tansey. Apparently after dealing with He-Man, normal military command no longer seems especially strange.

1989 — *Second Sight*. Police captain. Back to yelling at detectives.

1989 — *Back to the Future Part II*. He briefly returns home and discovers Biff has destroyed Hill Valley. Rather than flee, 1985A Strickland is literally defending his house with a shotgun. This is completely consistent with everything he's experienced.

1990 — *Back to the Future Part III*. Here's the kicker: Tolkan plays Marshal James Strickland in 1885. So maybe that isn't his ancestor at all. Maybe Strickland overshot while trying to get home, changed his first name, and just became a frontier lawman because, naturally, the Old West was also full of slackers.

1990 — *Dick Tracy*. He somehow ends up working for Big Boy Caprice as an accountant named Numbers. I like to imagine this is the one timeline where Strickland finally snaps and joins organized crime.

1991 — *Problem Child 2*. He becomes Mr. Thorn, meaning after surviving fighter pilots, nuclear war, Skeletor and organized crime, he once again decides dealing with children is a reasonable career move.

1993 — *Boiling Point*. Senior U.S. Treasury agent. Of course. The federal government has by this point realized there is one man who can be dropped into any situation and immediately begin yelling at everyone.

So the unified story becomes:

Gerald Strickland was not a high-school principal. He was a time-displaced government operative whose mission was to locate and discipline slackers throughout American history.

And the running joke is that every time he tries to retire, some new idiot appears.

Marty McFly.

Matthew Broderick nearly launching nuclear weapons.

Maverick buzzing a tower.

He-Man bringing Skeletor to suburban California.

Dick Tracy's mobsters.

Eventually Strickland realizes the horrible truth:

The slackers are not confined to Hill Valley.

They exist throughout space and time. 😆
