THE MAESTRO'S HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS MILITARY CAREER ================================================ Forget Tuscany. If you want peak Maestro, look into Bob Cobb's highly suspicious military career. Mark Metcalf, the actor behind The Maestro, famously played psychotic ROTC commander Doug Neidermeyer in ANIMAL HOUSE. The film's final title card explicitly states that Neidermeyer went to Vietnam and was fragged by his own troops -- a joke director John Landis later canonized in TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE. Except that in 1996 Landis directed THE STUPIDS and brought Metcalf back as Colonel Neidermeyer. Not only did he survive his own assassination, but the United States Army apparently reviewed the situation and promoted him. This is where the SEINFELD universe collapses in on itself. The wife in THE STUPIDS is played by Jessica Lundy, better known as Naomi, Jerry's ex-girlfriend with the laugh like Elmer Fudd sitting on a juicer. In this alternate universe, Naomi is married to Tom Arnold. In 1993, Julia Louis-Dreyfus accidentally parked in Tom Arnold's space on a studio lot. Arnold left a spectacularly hostile note, sparking a real-life blood feud involving Jason Alexander, soap-based windshield diplomacy from Roseanne, and Larry David retaliating by banning Arnold's crew from borrowing SEINFELD equipment. By 1996, John Landis had inadvertently built a cinematic reality where: * The Maestro survived Vietnam and made Colonel. * Jerry's ex-girlfriend married Elaine's real-life parking-lot nemesis. * Everything converged in a movie called THE STUPIDS. That is not a filmography. That is a containment failure. THE BOB COBB THEORY ------------------- The clean explanation is that Bob Cobb, The Maestro, Doug Neidermeyer and Colonel Neidermeyer are all different names for the same increasingly unmanageable man. He begins as an ROTC commander screaming at college students. He is fragged by his own troops, survives through sheer administrative fury, and returns to active duty with a promotion and a new civilian identity. Then he gets married into the SEINFELD orbit. This means that every time somebody describes The Maestro as elegant, cultured or mysterious, they are failing to disclose the Vietnam history. The Maestro was not Elaine's "one that got away." He got away from his own troops. THE LANDIS LOOP --------------- John Landis is the important connecting mechanism. He creates the original Neidermeyer joke, carries the joke into TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, and later reintroduces Colonel Neidermeyer in THE STUPIDS as if the Army has a robust system for processing men who were officially murdered by their subordinates. This is the sort of continuity nobody notices because each individual movie is busy doing something else. ANIMAL HOUSE is concerned with Delta House. THE STUPIDS is concerned with the Stupids. SEINFELD is concerned with parking, notes, grudges and the limits of human tolerance. But place the files next to each other and the pattern becomes visible. The Maestro is military authority wearing a dinner jacket. Colonel Neidermeyer is military authority wearing a uniform. Doug Neidermeyer is military authority before the paperwork catches up. Bob Cobb is what happens when the same personality gets reassigned to classical music, Vietnam and a Landis comedy without anyone checking the personnel file. FINAL ASSESSMENT ---------------- The Maestro is not a failed romance. He is a survivor of an inter-film military incident. John Landis is a walking disaster. And somewhere in the Nitetime archive there is probably a sealed Army file that reads: SUBJECT: NEIDERMEYER, DOUG / COBB, BOB STATUS: PROMOTED NOTE: DO NOT LET HIM NEAR A PARKING LOT The cinematic universe has been warned.
