It was a beautiful fall day in Madison, Wisconsin and my wife and I were ready for the Badger football game. We had been looking forward to this day for weeks, but we were a little short on cash. That's why my wife's win of a ticket to a pizza eating contest before the game came as a welcome surprise. The prize was $200 and we were determined to win it so we could buy some beers and snacks for the game.
The contest was hosted by Connie and Fish, the morning radio team, at a local Rocky Rococo's. The idea was to eat as much pizza as possible in 104 seconds, to match the radio station's frequency of 104.1. There were eight contestants in total, including myself.
When the contest began, I immediately came up with a strategy. I had seen eating contests before, so I knew that dunking the pizza in water before eating it would make it easier to swallow. I started off strong and was ahead of the other contestants at the 45-second mark. But then things took a turn.
A frat boy and his friends showed up and started throwing things at me while I was in the middle of eating. I was completely taken aback and didn't know what to do. But then I remembered the station manager was there, so I stepped back and pointed out what was happening to him. He removed the frat boy and his friends from the stage, and I went back to eating. When the time was called, I had only two pieces of pizza left, while the others had only managed to eat a third of theirs. I was declared the winner and handed my $200 prize.
But the fun wasn't over yet. The station wanted me to shoot a commercial for TV with Connie and Fish, and in the commercial, I had to keep eating pizza. After five takes, I finally asked that they just fix it in post and let me go. I also won another large pizza as a prize, but I was so full from all the eating that I couldn't eat for the rest of the day.
My wife gave me a big hug and we walked out of Rocky Rococo's, happy and proud of my victory. That pizza eating contest may have been just a small moment in our lives, but it was a memorable one. And every time we watch the Badger game, we always remember the day we won $200 by eating pizza.
